The Power of Interceptor Plus® and Credelio®

Ensuring the health and well-being of our furry companions is a top priority for every dog owner. As responsible pet parents, protecting our dogs from the threat of parasites, including fleas, ticks and worms, is crucial for their overall happiness and longevity. In the quest for complete parasite protection, Interceptor Plus and Credelio provide comprehensive solutions.

360-Degree Protection with Interceptor Plus and Credelio

Interceptor Plus, a monthly chew, serves as a robust defense against an array of parasites for dogs and puppies aged 6 weeks or older and weighing 2 pounds or more. It offers protection against all five major worms, including tapeworm, heartworm disease, adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections, addressing a comprehensive spectrum of internal parasites. Credelio is a small, tasty chewable approved for puppies and dogs eight weeks of age or older, weighing 4.4 pounds or greater, and provides rapid, lasting protection against fleas and ticks. Its effectiveness lasts for the entire month, protecting your pet from external parasites that can pose a threat to their health and comfort.

When It Comes to Ticks, Speed of Kill Matters

As the weather warms up and ticks make their grand appearance, understanding the significance of the speed of kill is vital when it comes to protecting our pets from ticks, which can transmit pathogens during the feeding process. Did you know that faster speed of kill rates reduce the risk of disease transmission and enhance overall pet quality of life? In this context, Credelio stands out with its swift action against ticks, ensuring a rapid and effective kill to minimize potential health risks.

Credelio also demonstrates a longer half-life following oral administration compared to other products such Simparica Trio, NexGard, and Bravecto. This extended half-life suggests that the rapid speed of kill associated with Credelio can be maintained for a more prolonged duration, offering sustained protection against ticks.

Credelio starts to kill ticks (Ixodes ricinus) and fleas in just four hours.1,2 In addition, it kills 98.7% of ticks within just eight hours2 and kills 100% of fleas throughout the entire month1. With Credelio’s active ingredient, lotilaner, a member of the isoxazoline family, a novel class of parasiticides that targets nerve receptors of ticks and fleas for powerful protection,3 you’ll have protection that is gentle on your dog but tough on fleas and ticks.

The Often-Misunderstood Risks of Tapeworms

While the importance of flea and tick protection cannot be understated, 360-degree protection entails worm control as well.

First, what is a tapeworm?

Tapeworms, common intestinal parasites that can affect dogs, exhibit a distinctive appearance – long, flat, and segmented. The segmented structure resembles grains of rice and is expelled through the feces of an infected dog. These segments may be visible in the stool, around the dog's anal area, or within their bedding.

  • There are several common species of tapeworm you should be aware of:
    • Dipylidium tapeworm – the most common species which is spread by fleas.
    • Taenia tapeworm – caught by dogs who scavenge infected animals while out walking.
    • Echinococcus granulosus and multilocularis tapeworms – whose primary hosts are wild or domestic dogs.
  • Tapeworm infections can manifest differently, in both pets and people, depending on the type, or species, of tapeworms and how the infection was introduced.

While there are several different types of tapeworms, Echinococcus species tapeworms are one of the riskiest for your pet, and potentially for you.4 Until very recently, it was challenging to determine the prevalence of Echinococcus spp. tapeworms in the United States due to outdated wildlife surveillance data and limitations in diagnostic testing for pet dogs. However, with advancements in these areas, experts have seen cases not only increase in number, but also spread to new areas of the country – making these tapeworms a growing public health risk.5

Dogs with tapeworms often show no clinical signs of disease, and Echinococcus tapeworms are very small, often only 3-6 mm and three segments as adults. Due to this, they have been historically difficult to see, diagnose and detect. One of the best and easiest ways to reduce the risk of tapeworms and potential spread among your pets, or to your family, is to make sure your dog has regular veterinary check-ups and is on a year-round parasite control program that specifically includes tapeworm protection, such as Interceptor Plus.
